Congaree National Park

Folk Art Canoe

Folk Art is an artistic representation of traditions, cultural heritage, Folklore and everyday life in a community. I was working as a ranger for the first federal celebration of Juneteenth at Congaree National Park in 2021, I wanted to highlight the park and the impact that it has made on the local community. I took a spoken word poem from a local Thaddeus β€œTad” Goodson, titled "The Big Swamps of the Congaree" that highlights his experiences in the lively swamp. I took major elements from his poem, designed and  illustrated his story on this canoe. Folk art is often made from scrap or repurposed items, this canoe was unusable, so it made the perfect candidate.

You can now find this canoe on display along with an exhibit sign in the auditorium of the Harry Hampton Visitor Center.

On Juneteenth myself and 113 people from 21 different states added color to my illustration.

Logos and Illustrations

During my time as a ranger at Congaree I had the opportunity to create many logos and illustrations for the park.
